Paper Maché Calavera

by Felipe Linares

Paper Maché

Ht. 15" x W. 8" x D. 8"

Modern paper maché was introduced into Mexico by the Spanish in the 1600s as a way to make objects for churches and is now widely used to make piñatas, “Judas figures,” toys, and giant puppets called “mojigangas.” Members of the famous Linares family in Mexico City are widely recognized as the finest paper maché artists in Mexico. They have carried paper maché to a high art and may need several months to complete a single decorated skull like this one, by Felipe Linares, created to help celebrate the Day of the Dead in a most colorful and playful way.
