Gonzalo Hernández Carrillo

Huichol

24" x 24"

The Huichol indigenous group remains one of the most intact primitive cultures in the Western Hemisphere. Their art, which began centuries ago, was originally tributes to the gods and now has become spectacular art, all derived from peyote visions, dreams, and ancient spiritual and mythological traditions. The artist presses one strand of yarn at a time onto a board covered with a mixture of beeswax and resin.

The doubled-headed eagle represents the Shaman's omnipotent power and ability to see in all directions. Father Sun rules the heavens, bringing warmth and illumination and life force to all living things. The peyote button in the center represents spiritual wisdom. The top two figures are shamans with their sacred wands, the wavy lines representing the power of these objects. The children beside the eagle wings are beginning their journey to sacred places. Candles, corn, god’s eyes, and sacred deer, and arrows are all shamanic paraphernalia.
